F-Secure Has a Smarter Cloud

Reputation is now a key criteria for identifying malware in the cloud

Helsinki, Finland – September 22, 2010: Not so long ago, the fight against malware often went like this. A young geek wanted to make a name for himself by developing a computer worm or virus, which he designed to replicate and spread millions of copies of itself. Antivirus companies would identify the malware and then develop specific signature protection that was installed on their customers’ computers to prevent infection.

Today it is a very different story. Malware is professionally produced in vast quantities by profit-driven criminals from around the world. In order to escape detection by antivirus scanning engines and signature protection, they are using advanced techniques to make each instance of their malware unique. As a result, F-Secure now receives about 50,000 samples of potential ‘new’ threats every day.

Signature protection alone is no longer sufficient against each new variant of a virus. Nor is it practical to continuously load millions of security updates on people’s computers. Instead, the fight against malware has now shifted to the cloud – an almost limitless source of information stored in data centers that can be accessed in real-time through the Internet. Whereas the traditional antivirus software installed on a computer only had a list of the known bad files, the cloud provides additional and instantly accessible criteria for analyzing all files: good files, bad files, common files, uncommon files, from good sources, bad sources, and so on.

F-Secure’s cloud is not just a giant database. It's much smarter than that. We are among the global leaders in developing the cloud to work in multiple ways to protect our customers. Our cloud makes decisions on the reputation of files based on a wide range of criteria. As an example, prevalence – how common the file is in the online world – is now one of the key factors in the decision-making process through which malware is identified.

F-Secure’s cloud turns the ‘uniqueness is beneficial’ malware strategy against the criminals. When the cloud identifies an application that is unique, it is usually a tell-tale sign that the application is in fact malware. Legitimate software is more prevalent. An unknown file which is common around the world can be quickly identified as safe, while something unknown and uncommon can immediately be treated as suspicious. F-Secure’s smarter cloud breaks the disguises used by criminals to hide their malware.

The newly launched F-Secure Internet Security 2011 software has one of the most advanced clouds in the industry. Its Real-time Protection Network was established already in 2007 and since then F-Secure has continued to develop its capabilities. Our enhanced cloud technology makes the fight against malware more effective than ever, which means that our customers can work, shop, bank, socialize and play online more safely.
